Jamie Herrera, representing IAFF Local 2487, addressed the board on Oct. 7, 2025 to recognize October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to update commissioners on recent legislative changes affecting firefighter health protections.
Herrera said the Professional Firefighters of Nevada (PFN) strengthened firefighter cancer protections in the recent legislative session by mandating annual cancer screenings (including full‑body cancer screening, mammograms, pap smears, prostate and thyroid exams) and by adding breast and ovarian cancers to the presumptive cancer lists for firefighters. Herrera cited higher cancer incidence and mortality among firefighters and framed the legislative changes as recognition of gender‑specific risks faced by female firefighters.
Ending: Herrera closed the report by offering to answer questions; the board thanked Local 2487 for the update.
