The Montebello City Council approved the purchase of two police service dogs, including necessary equipment and training, as part of the police department's ongoing public-safety resources.
Council member Peralta pulled the item to highlight the value of K-9 teams; staff noted the department recently added an urban search-and-rescue dog for the fire department named Nacho. Council members described the new dogs as an asset for law enforcement and public safety.
The motion to approve the purchase was made by Council member Peralta and seconded by Council member Alonso. The council recorded a 5-0 vote in favor of the purchase; Mayor Melendez cast the deciding aye as part of the unanimous roll call.
Staff will move forward with procurement, training and deployment plans consistent with department policy and return as necessary with operational updates.
