Following an executive session, the Douglas Unified School District governing board voted to accept a resignation submitted by Adriana Chavez, a teacher at Joe Carlson, and to assess liquidated-damages fees of $1,500.

The board considered the superintendent's recommendation in executive session under Arizona's open-meeting law provisions for personnel matters. After returning to open session, a board member moved to accept the superintendent's recommendation "to accept the resignation" and to charge liquidated-damages fees of $1,500. A second was recorded and the motion carried on a unanimous roll call.

Board members said they review such matters on a case-by-case basis and consider the best interest of the district in making determinations. Administration said it would contact legal counsel and proceed as directed.
