The Fort Lauderdale Board of Adjustment approved a variance request for wall signage at 1620–1622 North Federal Highway, case PLNBOA25080002, to permit a third wall-mounted sign intended to improve wayfinding to a 24-hour veterinary emergency facility.
Agent David Michael represented the applicant, Vedge ER for Pets, and said the building’s orientation and vegetation along the corridor make the front door difficult to see for drivers approaching from the northbound lanes. “For safety reasons, having pets go in and out of the door in the parking lot away from the road is safest,” Michael said, adding that customers arriving late at night need clear wayfinding. He said the requested sign areas are within the allowed square footage and that the signage will be illuminated because the facility is a 24-hour operation.
City staff confirmed the proposed wall signs were within permitted square footage limits and therefore did not require relief for sign area. Board discussion included a suggestion that the applicant add a lit building number to the sign for improved identification. Board member Jason moved to approve the variance from section 47-2-2.30 (as cited in the staff report); the motion was seconded by Pat (last name on the record). The roll-call vote recorded multiple votes in favor and the motion passed.
The approval allows the third wall sign on the north elevation and a sign over the front door for wayfinding; the applicant will still be required to obtain required building permits and comply with other code requirements for lighting and installation.
