The Coldwell Fire Farm American Mission on Tuesday, Aug. 19 approved a personnel reassignment, confirmed a new hire and opened applications for its next academy class, board members said.
The actions affect current staffing and how future candidates will be selected. The board approved a reassignment for an employee identified as Derek to move from chauffeur to firefighter, approved a set of promotions on the docket, and approved hiring Kaiden Bartley as a new employee. The chief announced an application window for the next recruit class from Aug. 20 through Sept. 20; applicants who meet qualifications will take an online test, be scored under the department's merit procedures and may be scheduled for interviews.
Board procedural votes were taken by voice vote. The reassignment and personnel motions were moved and seconded and carried on “aye” voice votes; no roll-call tallies were recorded in the transcript. The board also approved minutes and adjourned to its next meeting Sept. 16.
Staff and the chief explained the department recently shifted from a "Board of Works" process to a merit board system. Under that change, names remaining on the department's previous candidate list will not carry over for two years and must reapply; the chief said the existing list currently lacks candidates with required fire certifications, so the department will rely on the new application period to create a fresh list. The department is not advertising for lateral transfers at this time; candidates with previous fire experience will be handled case by case and may need to complete departmental training prior to assignment.
The chief said the application and scoring steps are outlined in the department's merit materials and that all returned applications will be forwarded to the board. The department described the selection sequence as: one-month application window, online testing, scoring per the merit guidance, ranking of candidates and interviews for those who qualify.
The meeting record shows the board approved the minutes, the reassignment, the promotions and the new hire by voice votes; no formal dissent or roll-call documentation appears in the transcript.
The board set its next regular meeting for Sept. 16.
