The Franklin City Fire Merit Commission on an otherwise brief meeting approved a ranked candidate list from a recent firefighter application process and confirmed three personnel promotions.
The commission voted to adopt the combined written-exam and interview rankings used to create the hiring list, which the commission chair said the department will notify by email and regular mail. The list determines the order in which openings will be offered: "If you are ranked number 1 on the list, you will get the first option or first offer for a position," the chair said.
The commission also approved promotions generated by a recent vacancy. On July 24, Captain Brian Reynolds retired, creating a merit captain opening. The commission approved promoting Lieutenant Mike Griggs to merit captain; the commission further approved moving the next candidate up into the merit lieutenant slot. The commissioners said Griggs will assume command of C shift and be sworn in at a city council meeting; the swearing-in is scheduled for Nov. 2 at 6 p.m., and Griggs is expected to take over C shift on Aug. 23.
Separately, the commission approved that Lane Sears and Andrew Snyder, having completed one year of probation on July 29, be advanced from probationary status to merit firefighters effective July 29.
All formal personnel approvals were moved, seconded and approved on voice votes during the meeting. The commission recorded no opposed votes on those items in the meeting transcript.
The meeting included routine business: approving minutes from the July 14 meeting and distributing a compilation of last year’s minutes for commissioners to review. The chair noted about 10 firefighters were present in the room during the session. The commission welcomed Lisa Brown to its membership and adjourned following the personnel actions.
Votes at a glance - Approve minutes of July 14 — motion approved (voice vote). - Approve ranked candidate hiring list (combined written exam + interview) — motion approved (voice vote). - Promote Lieutenant Mike Griggs to merit captain; fill resulting merit lieutenant slot (accepted by the next candidate) — motion approved (voice vote). Swearing-in scheduled at city council on Nov. 2 at 6:00 p.m.; Griggs to begin C shift on Aug. 23. - Promote Lane Sears and Andrew Snyder from probationary firefighters to merit firefighters, effective July 29 — motion approved (voice vote).
The commission did not debate changes to hiring procedure or funding during this meeting; commissioners and the chief noted administrative follow-up (mailing and emailing results, scheduling swearing-in) but no new policy actions were taken.
