The Harrison County Commission on July 9 approved a $3,000 special funding request to support the newly formed Bridgeport FFA alumni and supporters chapter. Jamie Cox, treasurer of the group, told the commission the agricultural program at Bridgeport High School has expanded in recent years and that students need support for official dress, travel and fundraising activities.
Cox said the chapter arranged a cattle-battle fundraiser in partnership with McCrae Cattle and requested $3,000 to cover bleacher rental for an estimated 1,400 attendees; she said the rental quote they found totaled approximately $2,800 plus taxes. Cox described the chapter’s work with students and community organizations, including visits to nursing homes and student participation in entrepreneurship contests and officer retreats.
Commission President moved to approve the request; the motion passed with no opposition among commissioners present. The commission wished the chapter luck and asked staff to process the payment as a special funding request. Cox said the event was scheduled for July 8–9 and invited commissioners to attend.
