Flat Rock council approves pay raise, appointments and infrastructure repairs in voice votes

Preliminary cost estimates were reported at about $300,000, and staff said there is money available in the water fund to cover the work. The council approved paying Kennedy Industries $7,164 to replace a faulty check valve at a lift station; staff said the replacement requires shutting down part of the system and that the city lacks the equipment to perform the work.
At the intersection of Telegraph and Vreeland, the council declined to spend approximately $126,250 to replace existing decorative black signal poles and instead directed staff to use standard overhead signal wiring as MDOT engineering proceeds. A council member noted that the replacement poles' coating is intended to rust, which would change their color, and questioned spending the money to lose the black finish.
The council approved appointing David Popp as the new full-time building and safety director at an annual salary of $95,000. Popp thanked the council and said he looked forward to "hopefully, a long term engagement."
Other nonbinding items: the Brownfield board will hold an organizational meeting following the TIFA meeting; the community center announced a daddy-daughter dance set for Feb. 7 with registration requested by Jan. 31 ($25 per person; $20 for each additional child).
