Smithfield council fills multiple advisory-board seats; planning board picks three new members

Council handled contested seats by secret ballot, tallied the results and then approved the slate by motion. Several new appointees were present in the council chamber and were thanked for volunteering. Council members said citizens could serve on up to two boards and encouraged residents who were not selected to remain involved and reapply when openings arise.
The council did not appoint alternates at this time; the mayor noted alternates were added historically to ensure quorum for boards but staff recommended focusing on permanent seats.
