The Flat Rock City Council approved a resolution authorizing police officer training reimbursement agreements that cover cadet tuition and include a repayment requirement if the officer leaves before a required service period, staff said.
According to the staff presentation, Governor Whitmer signed the law last year; staff identified it in the meeting as “public act 43 of 02/2023,” effective June 13, 2023, authorizing local units to enter training-cost agreements. The agreement presented to council would pay a cadet’s tuition for a law-enforcement academy and require the cadet to remain employed with the city for four years; if the cadet leaves prior to four years the agreement contains a reimbursement provision.
The resolution was moved and approved by voice vote; no roll-call tally was recorded in the transcript. The item’s cover materials and the presenter said this is the first such agreement the city has executed under the new law.
The transcript did not include an example agreement or a specific repayment schedule in dollars; the council approved the resolution as presented and the clerk was asked to process late correspondence and finalize paperwork.
