At its Aug. 11 meeting, the Peachtree City Planning Commission addressed conflicting language in the city sign ordinance about signs placed above a building’s roof line and whether parapets should be treated as an exception.
Staff said the sign code contains general restrictions on roof signs but also a separate paragraph that appears to allow certain parapet-mounted signage in some commercial zones, creating ambiguity for staff and applicants. "Staff is not pushing for or against. We're just wanting to learn how the city wishes to move forward with a sign above the roof line," planning staff said.
Commissioners generally agreed that signs should not extend above the roof line or parapet. Commissioner Chris said, after prior discussions, he favored prohibiting roof signs and limiting signage to below the roof line; other commissioners asked staff to remove the separate parapet allowance (section 66‑15) from the ordinance and to add or clarify a definition of "parapet" so the code is unambiguous.
Staff will draft revised language that clarifies the treatment of parapets and roof-line signs, remove the section the commission identified as inconsistent if the commission remains in agreement, and return the proposed text to the commission for formal action.
