The Harrison County Commission voted to proceed with gathering specifications and cost estimates for a helicopter landing pad at the Salem armory so the county and city can apply for funding from the First Foundation.
Commissioners said the scope will include concrete depth and width, lighting and other specifications that HealthMet and EMS representatives indicated are needed. County staff said the commission’s role would be to prepare the cost package and application; the City of Salem previously approved designating the property for a helipad.
Brandy Garner, mayor of Salem, told commissioners the landing pad would improve emergency response, reduce disruptions caused by landing in unprepared fields and support regional development. Garner said the armory site already houses EMS and that a permanent pad would reduce access problems for residents and responders.
Commissioners approved a motion to obtain bids and specifications immediately and to submit the application to the First Foundation once cost estimates are available.
