The Property and Facilities Committee approved a fit‑out, valued at an amount not to exceed $16,000,000, to create a Center of Excellence in Digital Education (PittEdge) on the second floor of the Fifth and Halkett Building.
Dwayne Finckney introduced the proposal and said the center will support planning, development and implementation of online and continuing education programming. Tony Dueto, director of the Center (PittEdge) and dean of the School of Health and Rehab Sciences, described the center’s purpose and the kinds of space planned: “We have designed this space to accommodate these kinds of hybrid experiences,” Dueto said, noting the fit‑out will include simulation rooms, a high‑fidelity recording studio and large flexible classrooms and laboratories for hybrid learning.
Committee materials and Finckney noted that approval of this project is within the committee’s authority under the committee charter. The item will be funded by education and general debt repaid by the education and general operating budget, the committee was told.
Committee members asked how digital programming will use the physical space; Dueto said the center will support immersions—brief on‑campus periods for clinical and hybrid programs that cannot be delivered entirely online—and that locating such spaces on campus would improve the student experience and reduce reliance on off‑campus venues. After a motion and second, the committee voted in favor of the resolution; the chair announced the resolution was approved.
