Bolivar schedules monthlong bicentennial celebration with pageant, gala, parades and community events

Bolivar city officials announced a monthlong schedule of events to mark the city’s bicentennial, starting Oct. 12 and running through a weekend of barbecue and music.
The mayor said the schedule opens with a Miss Bolivar pageant at the theater at 4 p.m. on Oct. 12, a bicentennial gala with a 6 p.m. social hour and 7 p.m. program on Oct. 18, a community worship service on the square at 6 p.m. on Oct. 19 and a “mini hee haw” show on the square at 7 p.m. on Oct. 20. The mayor encouraged residents to attend a community birthday celebration with hot dogs, cake and ice cream from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the following Tuesday and noted pep rallies and school visits planned Oct. 23, with a barbecue blowout and competitive teams on Oct. 24–25.
“Our Miss Bolivar pageant is at 4:00 on the 12th,” the mayor said. “We will not run out of food. So I’ll make that promise.”
The tourism and development director, Hill, said crews have begun hanging bicentennial banners and reminded the council that promotional items and T‑shirts are for sale to the public for $20; council members were asked to provide sizes to receive shirts for themselves and guests.
Why it matters: The events represent the city’s public-facing bicentennial program and will require coordination among departments for closures, security and event logistics. Council members were asked to promote the schedule on social media and attend events with constituents.
Supporting details: The mayor also noted that city offices will be closed for Columbus Day, Oct. 13.
