Council members and community volunteers reported a strong turnout for the DDA’s trunk-or-treat/Spooktacular event and described plans for a coordinated Thanksgiving outreach involving multiple churches, businesses and the fire department.
Liz (DDA/organizer) told council the event drew "anywhere from 700 to a thousand participants" and that volunteers handed out a large volume of candy and full-size bars. Mayor Ballard and multiple councilmembers thanked volunteers including Huron and Flat Rock high-school students, the DDA, the police and fire departments, and local businesses that provided food and pumpkins.
Councilmember Jeremiah said the Thanksgiving outreach will involve churches, the CSO, fire department partners, and at least 30 Flat Rock businesses that had already committed; several collection points were listed for canned-goods donations, including MD First Urgent Care, Big B Coffee, the fire department, city hall, Hometown Ice Cream and Candy, and Merchant's Bank. The congregational church will provide a hot meal the Wednesday before Thanksgiving; the Methodist church and partners will distribute box kits.
Why it matters: The event and outreach demonstrate cross-sector volunteer engagement and provide support to residents who are food-insecure or homeless.
