City staff updated the Snellville City Mayor and Council on multiple development projects and operational items at the April 28 work session.
Town Center and downtown: City staff reported that the Town Center (referred to as the Grove/Town Center) has several tenants under construction and six leases signed; tenants mentioned included Parkside, Grove Taqueria, Dumpling Master and Pliable's. Staff said one tenant—described as a brewery—was awaiting a gas meter and expected to begin sampling and limited service as early as late June or early July.
Downtown Development Authority: The council was introduced to Jan Harris, the new downtown development/DDA director. Harris said she has experience in downtown development and Main Street programs and said she was eager to begin work with the Grove and Town Center.
Parking and delivery zone: Staff described recurring congestion at the Sawyer entrance near the Tomlin property caused by delivery vehicles (including postal and commercial delivery trucks). The city is considering re-striping two adjacent parking spaces as a delivery zone to reduce delivery-related blockages of the parking deck exit. Councilmembers discussed enforcement and the need for clear signage and markings so the designated delivery area is used appropriately. They also discussed the possibility of speed studies or traffic-calming measures on Sawyer to address speed and safety concerns.
Briscoe Park community center and other projects: Construction for the Briscoe Park community center is scheduled to begin May 5, with a groundbreaking event planned for May 1 at 4:30 p.m. The city said it will receive Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding and expects county officials and parks-and-recreation representatives to attend the ceremony. Staff also reported sidewalk project closeout steps and utility relocations for an intersection improvement project that began March 31.
Other operational items: Staff reminded the council that recycling registration remains open and noted a surplus listing that includes equipment from the police department; councilmembers briefly discussed whether certain stainless-steel fixtures could be repurposed for the new community center before sale.
Next steps: Staff will work on signage and enforcement language for the proposed delivery zone, coordinate the Briscoe Park groundbreaking and continue project closeouts and utility coordination for the intersection and sewer work.
