Union County will hold a free household hazardous waste drive-through collection on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Union County Agricultural Center, a Union County staff member announced. Staff will remove acceptable materials from vehicles during the event.
The event is intended for residential customers only; businesses will not be accepted. The county said commonly refused curbside items and some materials not accepted at regular county collection sites may be brought to the event, including paint (cans and aerosol or spray paint), pesticides and herbicides, household cleaners such as bleach and other harsh chemicals, gasoline and oil, propane or helium tanks, documents for shredding, and expired or unneeded medications for safe disposal through Operation Medicine Drop, a partnership with the Union County Sheriff’s Office. The county said some items will not be accepted at the event and advised residents to check the county website for a complete list of acceptable and unacceptable items.
The county described the event as a free opportunity for residents to dispose of household hazardous materials that are not accepted in curbside collection services or at Union County convenience sites. The announcement asked residents to continue to dispose of ordinary household trash and recycling through their curbside service, the county landfill, or county convenience sites rather than at the hazardous-waste event.
Residents with questions were directed to the county website or to contact county staff for details about the list of accepted items and any restrictions. The county reiterated that the event is for household quantities only and is free of charge.
The announcement did not provide a start time, a schedule of hours for the Sept. 13 drive-through, or a list of the specific items the county will refuse at the event; the county said those details are available on its website.
