Summary
The council approved a $192,020 purchase of a modular vehicle barrier system from Advanced Security Technologies to protect town-center events; the purchase will be funded from speed‑camera/public‑safety funds, council was told.
The Snellville mayor and council on May 27 approved a $192,020 purchase of a modular vehicle barrier system from Advanced Security Technologies for use at public events and in town-center areas.
A motion to approve the purchase carried 6-0.
Police leadership and staff described the purchase as a public-safety initiative intended to stop or slow an unauthorized vehicle during crowded events. The council discussed recent vehicle-ramming incidents in other jurisdictions and said the barrier system would increase protection for pedestrians and officers at crowded gatherings, including the Christmas tree lighting and Fourth of July events.
According to the chief and other staff, the purchase will be funded from speed-camera–related or other public-safety funds rather than the city’s general fund; staff said the funding source is permitted by law for public-safety initiatives tied to speed-camera programs. The chief said ordering the system now would result in an estimated delivery in September or October.
Councilmembers expressed support for the purchase as timely and necessary to protect residents and staff at large events. The council voted 6-0 to approve the $192,020 purchase; councilmembers did not request amendments to the procurement on the floor.
The vendor listed in the motion was Advanced Security Technologies. Staff will complete procurement steps and coordinate delivery and staging for upcoming events.
