Council to consider resolution affirming Keith Terrell Complex name; sign replacement deferred for further discussion

City staff briefed the council on concerns raised by a former Platteville resident about legacy signage at Legion Park and recommended that the council adopt a resolution affirming the Keith Terrell Sports Complex name and recording that intention in city records.

Staff said the original exterior sign near the Pitt Street entrance (installed in May 2000) had been removed at some point and replaced with a smaller commemorative sign at the Legion Field pavilion; the disposition of the original sign is unknown. Staff recommended keeping the current commemorative sign on the pavilion and using a resolution to memorialize the name so future staff understand the council’s intent.

Council discussion Some councilmembers noted the park is commonly known as Legion Park or Legion Field, and members discussed whether signage could combine the navigability of a single park name with recognition of named fields and memorials. Staff added draft language providing that memorial names would remain until the earliest of: the complex no longer serving its intended purpose, significant replacement of existing structures, removal of existing structures, or a future council decision that renaming would better serve Legion Park’s mission.

Next steps The council will consider a formal resolution at an upcoming meeting (agenda item to be placed for action). Staff said they would not immediately replicate the original Pitt Street sign but would proceed with the existing pavilion sign and the proposed resolution to record the council’s intent.
