Contractor to begin StreamBank repairs next week; trail closures expected near Mineral Street and Valley Road

Delta 3 Engineering told the Platteville Common Council on Oct. 8 that contractor Rule Construction will begin StreamBank stabilization work next week, with initial closures focused under the East Mineral Street bridge.
Dan Dressen of Delta 3 Engineering said the StreamBank project was funded by a grant awarded three years earlier and that the contractor’s start was delayed while addressing emergency water-main work in Dodgeville. Dressen said work under the East Mineral Street bridge will require concrete pours and curing; the trail segment there could be closed for one to two weeks while concrete cures and related work is completed.
Work scope and timing - Initial work: concrete infill under the bridge abutment that separates the channel from the bike path; concrete will also be placed between the east-side abutment and the sidewalk to reduce seasonal mud accumulation. - Duration: Dressen estimated the bridge/abutment work will take a little more than a week for the contractor tasks plus curing time; the trail will be closed during that period. - Follow-up work: crews will replace and regrade riprap and attempt to reuse riprap where possible; regrading and topsoil/seed coverage will meet current DNR recommendations for stream-bank treatments. - Other locations: Valley Road (addressing a prior slope failure and riprap placed by city crews), and the pedestrian/fishing-pier area near Country Kitchen (resetting riprap and grading near the pedestrian bridge).
Regulatory and public-access notes Dressen said the work is being done above the ordinary high‑water mark and therefore is not subject to the Oct. 15 seasonal restriction referenced earlier in the meeting; staff confirmed DNR involvement and coordination. Councilmembers asked that the project be sited to avoid impacts to traffic; staff said the work under the bridge will not impede traffic because it is below the bridge deck.
Maintenance and stabilization Dressen said the contractor will overseed with annual ryegrass to aid winter stabilization. He noted that while concrete and regrading will make maintenance easier, the project cannot stop all mud from entering the channel during floods.
Ending Staff asked that the city continue to coordinate notifications for users and public‑works updates; the council thanked Dressen and the contractor for getting the project underway.
