Summary
A member of American Legion Post 3631 urged Mayor Kaufman and City Council to reconsider removing the city's Veterans Commission and to better use existing veterans' organizations to support local veterans and their families.
Tanya, a member of American Legion Post 3631, told the Aurora City Council during the public comment listening session that she opposes removing the city's Veterans Commission.
She said Aurora already has multiple veterans organizations that could support veterans and their families and that the city does not fully use those resources. "There are many organizations in Aurora that, many of the veterans do not know or are utilized," Tanya said, naming American Legion Post 3631 and other groups.
The comment came during the public comment listening session, which the mayor and council scheduled before the regular meeting. Tanya referenced Mayor Kaufman and Councilman Medina in describing local veterans' outreach; she said the American Legion is preparing a historical acknowledgment at its Colfax location and that other veterans organizations assist widows and veterans in need.
Tanya asked for continued engagement and expressed a desire to meet council members in person when meetings resume in person.
The public comment period is advisory; the council did not take a formal vote during the listening session. Staff and councilmembers moved on to administrative matters and resumed the regular meeting at the time announced by the mayor.
