Committee members reviewed resident requests for more shade and seating at Walter Stinson Park and discussed options ranging from shade sails to additional benches and trash receptacles.
"We discussed it, like, some sort of, like, shading, within Walter Simpson Park, particularly around that playground area," a committee member said, and later staff described a Rocky River example using paired shade sails. Staff estimated an example package of two sails and posts at roughly $15,000, though concrete work and final dimensions would add cost and were not included in that figure.
Members suggested seeking grant funding and noted the timing: any large installations would likely be planned, priced and inserted into future budgets rather than built this year. Council members agreed to do a site visit and to return to the committee with conceptual placement options and cost estimates.
The meeting also addressed routine park needs: requests for more picnic tables, benches, and strategically placed trash receptacles to reduce waste and illegal dumping. Service staff said park trash is emptied weekly and sometimes twice weekly during the season, and that illegal dumping has occurred near some containers during the off season.
Committee members raised a recurring resident request for a dog park. The idea has been discussed at prior meetings; members said questions remain about location, maintenance, noise and whether city-owned land is available. Possible temporary locations discussed included a site in front of Wiley (a non-city-owned parcel would require outside approvals). Members suggested researching examples used in other suburbs (some gated by key-fob for residents, others open-access) and checking guidelines from the American Kennel Club and peer cities.
On smaller items, committee members requested additional benches and more frequent trash pickups in high-use areas. Staff agreed to schedule a field visit and to bring more concrete costs and, where applicable, grant options to a future meeting.
