Board approves 11 new STEM/CTE courses for Lakeview K–8; district says equipment already purchased

The Kenosha Unified School Board voted to add 11 new courses at Lakeview K–8 Academy, expanding STEM and career-technical educational options for elementary and middle school students.
Courses approved include App Creators, Automation and Robotics, Computer Science for Innovators and Makers, Design and Modeling, Elementary STEM, Energy and the Environment, Flight and Space, Green Architecture, Hand Tools Essentials, Middle School STEM Foundations, Magic Electrons, Medical Detectives, and Science & Technology (course names as presented in the board packet).
District staff said none of the approved courses require new district funding: equipment has already been purchased or is on order for summer installation. Board members asked whether the program should be described as STEAM to reflect arts integration; staff said the courses will align with existing STEM/STEAM programming across grades.
Student assignment/choice question: Board members asked about the possibility of giving enrollment preference to neighborhood students when Lakeview operates as a choice program. District staff said establishing a preference is the board’s prerogative and described technical options (percentage or fixed-seat allocations) and noted historically about one-third of Lakeview’s students live in the immediate neighborhood. The board took no immediate boundary action and said it may consider assignment or preference questions later.
Board action: A motion to approve the courses was made and seconded; the board approved the addition by voice vote. District staff said implementation schedules and course descriptions are in the packet and that equipment orders are being coordinated for summer.
