Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Mike Swan and Deputy Superintendent Karen Alton opened the school year with a push for attendance, reduced screen time and student wellness in a joint welcome to students, staff and families.
Swan introduced the district’s theme for the year and framed it as a guiding mindset: “Our theme this year is every mind focused, every hand working, and that's more than a motto. It's our mindset,” he said. Alton added that the district was “excited to welcome back our students, staff, and families for a new school year.”
The administrators said the theme reflects expectations for classroom behavior and broader support from parents and guardians. Alton said: “It's about showing up, being present, and giving our best every day. When students arrive on time and ready to learn, it sets the tone for success.” Swan emphasized wellness measures that support learning, saying, “Good nutrition, a good night's sleep, and a time to unplug all play a role in helping students stay sharp and feel their best.”
Both leaders urged limits on devices during instructional time. Alton said, “This year, we are encouraging less screen time and more real time focus. Think paper, pencils, books, and meaningful connection. Cell phones stay off and away during learning.” They also encouraged family routines to support literacy: Alton said, “And of course, reading with your child, even for just a few minutes a day, can make a lasting impact.”
The remarks concluded with a shared forward-looking note. Swan said, “Thank you for being our partners in education. Together, we'll make this a great year,” and Alton closed, “Let's make it a great year together.”
The remarks were framed as opening comments and did not include policy changes, motions or formal actions by the school board.
