Council establishes one-way traffic pattern near Lapham school to ease pick-up and drop-off congestion

The Common Council approved an ordinance to make one-way traffic permanent on portions of South 60th and South 60 Third (near Lapham school), formalizing a pattern the city previously used during construction of bioswale bump-outs at a nearby intersection.
City staff and aldermen said the traffic change was piloted during an intensive bioswale project at 60th and Lapham to manage school pick-up and drop-off chaos, and that parents, teachers and the neighborhood association responded positively. The project included bump-outs on all four corners of the intersection that serve both stormwater management and traffic calming.
“While we were doing that project, we set up a traffic pattern…The school commented how much they liked it,” a city official said. Council members noted fewer complaints about speeding on the block since the calming measures were installed and said the permanent one-way change will help mitigate illegal parking and improve safety during peak school times.
A motion to approve the ordinance carried on a voice vote.
