Snellville City Councilors asked the city manager at the May 12 work session to schedule meetings with Gwinnett County and the Georgia Department of Transportation to review proposed widening plans for Highway 124 and to explore ways to reduce the project's impact on the city.
Council members said preliminary designs for the section between Ronald Reagan Boulevard and U.S. 78 have broad ramifications for Snellville's businesses and neighborhoods. The presiding official urged staff to "get the meetings set up" with county and state partners and to consider hiring a transportation consultant to recommend mitigation options once the city has more detailed plans.
Staff noted new traffic‑tracking technology being developed by the company Flock that will provide travel‑origin and destination detail within about six to eight months; current design work, officials said, has relied primarily on throughput counts (for example, a cited design throughput of roughly 45,000 vehicles per day at one intersection). Council members said additional data could affect design choices and urged early engagement so the city is not constrained by a completed external design.
Council also mentioned neighborhood requests to close or limit certain local connections adjacent to the project and suggested hosting local informational meetings in Snellville so residents can review proposed plans. No formal action or vote was taken; council directed staff to begin outreach to Gwinnett County and the state DOT.
