The Medina City Council Finance Committee approved a $50,000 expenditure, contingent on contributions from Medina County and the two other cities participating in the regional shelter effort, to support the Next Step Up shelter. The committee voted to condition the city pledge on countywide participation before releasing funds.
Staff said the $50,000 would come from the city’s national opioid-settlement account, which the presenter said has excess funds earmarked for treatment, recovery and housing initiatives. Committee members and staff said the proposed expenditure aligns with allowable uses of the settlement proceeds but agreed the city should proceed only if other jurisdictions that are expected to share costs also commit funding.
Committee discussion emphasized the regional nature of the project and requested that the mayor and staff secure matching commitments before releasing the city funds. One committee member moved to approve the $50,000 subject to contributions from the county and the two neighboring cities; the motion carried on a voice vote.
Members said the appropriation will be contingent on formal confirmation of the other jurisdictions’ contributions and that staff should report back once those commitments are secured.
