Lake Central Best Buddies chapters win state recognition; program expands to elementary level

The Lake Central School Corporation board on Oct. 6 recognized students and sponsors of the district's Best Buddies chapters after staff and sponsors reported the program won two state awards this year and has expanded to the elementary level.
Mr. Matt Williams and Mrs. Adrianna Ponce, listed by a presenter as co-sponsors of the Best Buddies program, joined the board to be recognized. District staff said Best Buddies chapters operate at the high school and at Kayler and Clark (middle-school sites referenced by presenters), and that the district this year launched its first elementary chapter at Hohman Elementary.
A presenter told the board the program builds friendships between students with and without disabilities through buddy pairings, and she credited the organization with improving school culture and student life across the district. The board thanked the sponsors, students and parents for their efforts, noting the district's pride in the program and its expansion.
No formal action was required; the item was a recognition and the board allowed honored students and guests to leave early if needed.
