Community group urges Kershaw County board to support YMCA project

Joe Counts, president of the Gentlemen's Club of Kershaw County, and the group's vice president, Jackie Murphy, told the Kershaw County School District Board of Trustees on Aug. 5 that they support building a YMCA in the county and asked the board to consider the potential benefits for students.
The Gentlemen's Club representatives said a YMCA could provide swimming instruction, weight-training and other physical-fitness opportunities that would complement formal school instruction. "I believe that the YMCA could pay huge dividends if we could get one in Kershaw County," Jackie Murphy said, noting she had discussed program ideas with Scott Balcom, who works with YMCAs in nearby Richland County.
Murphy said her grandchildren attend Kershaw County schools and that physical education is a countywide concern. Joe Counts said the group's recent local preservation work and a unanimous resolution they helped pass show the club's civic engagement, and he told the board he intends to contact members of Congress and senators to seek fiscal support for a YMCA project.
Board members did not take any formal action during the meeting on the YMCA proposal. The presentation was made during the public forum and the speakers left the matter for future consideration and outside fundraising.
The presentation included members Ernest Nelson and Clifford Griffin attending with the speakers. No specific funding plan, site or timeline for a YMCA was provided to the board during the remarks.
