The Court Reporters Board of California advised consumers and licensees that basing compensation for court reporting services on the outcome of a case could violate professional standards in the California Code of Regulations, the board said.
The board said the professional standards require that an officer licensee not be financially interested in a proceeding and must "act without bias toward or prejudice against any parties and their attorneys." The board further said licensees and court reporting firms "will not enter into, arrange, or participate in a relationship in which compensation for reporting services is based upon the outcome of the proceeding." The advisory said firms must follow the same statutes that apply to individual licensees and that any firm found to have adopted such practices may be subject to discipline.
The board provided a phone number and email for questions: (916) 263-3660 and crbenforcement@dca.ca.gov.
The advisory was delivered as a public announcement; no vote or formal action was recorded in the meeting transcript.
