Student leaders at Southside High School used the school'produced Cyclone Snapshot broadcast to promote Spirit Week and homecoming activities and to encourage student participation across clubs and events.
On the program, Christian (senior class president) and Eric (student government president) described Spirit Week beginning the week of Sept. 22 and detailed dress'up themes and the pep rally. "So on Saturday, right after Spirit Week, we have our homecoming football game," Eric said, describing the parade that leads to the game. Christian said one of his "favorite events of the whole school year is the junior carnival," and noted that the carnival helps fund the senior prom.
The schedule and themes explained on the broadcast: Monday of Spirit Week (Sept. 22) will be a country/western or country'club theme; Thursday will be "decades day" (any decade before 2010); and Friday will feature grade'color dress'ups and a pep rally. Under the color plan shared on the show, seniors wear blue, juniors wear red, sophomores wear white and freshmen wear gray. The broadcast said periods would be shortened on the pep'rally day so the event can take place at the end of the school day.
Students also described extracurricular plans. Christian and Eric said they are cofounders of a new ping'pong club, and both encouraged underclassmen to get involved in clubs and other opportunities. "Quality is always gonna be better than quantity," Eric advised students considering where to invest their time. The host reminded students that counselors can help with club schedules and course planning.
The district presenter on the Cyclone Snapshot read a calendar of upcoming fall events for the high school: back'to'school night on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m., with the first PTSA meeting at 6:15 p.m.; ninth- and tenth'grade parent night on Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m.; the homecoming parade Sept. 27 at 12:00 p.m. followed by the homecoming football game at 2:00 p.m.; the twelfth'grade parent night on Sept. 29 at 6:45 p.m. followed by a college fair at 7:30 p.m.; and a pep rally on Friday, Sept. 26 during ninth period, as announced on the show. The broadcast closed by asking viewers to follow the district on social media for updates.
The segment also included a short "pulse of the hallway" feature with brief student remarks about summer and what they're looking forward to; those on'camera remarks echoed the program'wide encouragement to participate in clubs, athletics and Spirit Week activities.
