The Smyth County Board of Supervisors approved a series of administrative and budget actions at its Sept. 11 meeting and heard a separate planning matter at a Sept. 25 joint public hearing that the board deferred for decision until Oct. 9.

At the Sept. 11 meeting the board accepted two budget amendments, accepted the monthly financial status report and payment of invoices, and accepted second-quarter appropriation requests. The board also accepted a proclamation acknowledging September as Constitution Week and accepted a resolution related to an opioid direct settlement; the resolution’s dollar amount and settlement details were not specified in the meeting recap.

The supervisors authorized county staff to survey property owners near the McGrady Convenience Station about a potential sewer expansion. The authorization was to conduct outreach and a survey; the board did not approve construction or commit funds for sewer work at that meeting.

The board accepted an easement for the Appalachian Center for Hope; the recap did not specify the easement’s area or terms. Supervisors also requested a speed study from BDOT regarding Ad Wolf Road so that the state agency can assess traffic speed and safety there.

At a Sept. 25 joint public hearing with the Smyth County Planning Commission, the board heard a request for a special-use permit to allow an accessory structure taller than 150 feet without an accompanying main building in Saltville. No vote occurred at the hearing; the board indicated it would consider the permit request at its Oct. 9 meeting.
