Bike Walk North Carolina to hold transportation summit in Hickory this September

Bruce Tretter, identifying himself as a Hickory resident, business owner and board member of Bike Walk North Carolina, told the City Council on Aug. 5 that the statewide advocacy group will host its 14th annual transportation summit in Hickory in September.
Tretter said the summit will run Sunday through Tuesday in September and will showcase projects in Hickory, including the CityWalk multiuse trail network and downtown renovation that seeded downtown and business-park investments. He said Bike Walk North Carolina is funded in part by the Governor's Highway Safety Program and runs programs such as a friendly-driver initiative working with high schools.
Tretter invited council members and the public to attend and said the summit will feature sessions on "inspired spaces" and how Hickory's projects can be transferred to other towns. He said the multiuse trail construction is nearly finished and the summit will highlight lessons the city can export. The council thanked Tretter for announcing the summit; no action or formal vote resulted from the announcement.
