During the Sept. 24 session of the 187th District Court, Judge Stephanie Boyd ordered a judge's warrant for a defendant who failed to appear and set return dates for other defendants whose cases require additional inquiry or evidence review.
The court recalled the case of Christina Michelle Canales, who did not appear after an initial call on the docket. "State: we're requesting a bond forfeiture, your honor," a prosecutor said on the record, and Judge Boyd responded, "The court will do a judge's warrant, remain your client without bond. If your client makes an appearance, the court will reconsider." The order followed the prosecutor's representation that the defendant had not been present for the earlier scheduled appearance.
Judge Boyd also addressed scheduling and continuances for other defendants present or discussed in the hearing. After learning that one defendant, Robert Keones, was in a hospital, the judge set him to return on Oct. 21 and said the court would attempt to accommodate a Zoom appearance if the hospital setting required it. The court set Ricardo Cantu to return on Sept. 30 to allow prosecutors and defense counsel time to locate potential video evidence; counsel and the court discussed available docket dates and the need to review body-camera footage.
Court staff and deputies were directed to notify parties and to return the named defendants on the scheduled dates. The warrant issued for the absent defendant remains in effect unless the defendant subsequently appears and the court reconsiders bond.
