Callie Mann, the district’s ex officio student board member, was unable to attend a Sept. 4 board meeting; Superintendent Mister Gavin read her report aloud.
Mann’s report said many students have found the district’s cell-phone policy reduced distractions in lunch and free periods, though some students miss device access during those times. She highlighted new course offerings that students have enjoyed, including a unified theater class mixing students in the core program with general-education students, as well as classes such as fashion marketing and IB dance.
Mann asked the district to improve how new courses are publicized during course selection, suggesting counselors or administrators provide clearer information so students do not miss opportunities to enroll in new offerings. The report also noted that seniors will have a postsecondary planning day on Sept. 12 devoted to college and life-after-high-school planning; Mann concluded by wishing everyone a good start to the school year.
Because Mann’s report was read by the superintendent, direct quotes were drawn from the text he presented; the student was not present to take questions or expand on the suggestions.
