Port Richey City Council appointed Christine Sullivan to the vacant council seat at its Aug. 12 meeting and administered the oath of office the same evening.
The council considered three candidates — Christine Sullivan, Linda Rodriguez and Matt Douglas — who each addressed the council before members discussed appointments in closed consideration. After competing motions, the council voted to appoint Sullivan; the motion carried and Sullivan was sworn in at the meeting.
Sullivan introduced herself to the council and described her background as a retired corporate paralegal with experience in regulatory compliance and policy work. At the swearing she repeated the oath of office with the standard language before taking her seat: “I do solemnly swear that I will support, protect and defend the Constitution and government of the United States and the state of Florida… and that I will faithfully perform the duties of councilwoman on which I am now about to enter.”
Why it matters: the appointment fills the seat for the remainder of the term; by charter the seat will appear on the April special election ballot to fill the one‑year remainder of the term unless council chooses to call an earlier election. Council said it would leave the election on the regular April cycle.
Council remarks and process: members thanked all three candidates for their interest and encouraged those not selected to remain engaged in city boards and committees. Staff arranged to have Sullivan complete post‑appointment paperwork and to publish the appointment and upcoming election schedule.
Formal action: the council’s motion to appoint Christine Sullivan passed by voice vote; the city clerk administered the oath of office and Sullivan assumed the duties of councilwoman immediately.
