Dawson County seeks IGA with Georgia DNR to move radio tower to Monument Road site

Staff asked the board to approve an intergovernmental agreement with Georgia Department of Natural Resources to locate a radio system site on the Tobacco Patch tract on Monument Road after FAA denial at a prior site; staff said the DNR site would be zero-cost and would help complete the county's radio upgrades.
Personnel Manager Melissa Hawk briefed commissioners June 5 on an intergovernmental agreement proposed with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to place a radio system site on the Tobacco Patch tract on Monument Road.
Hawk said the county sought FAA approval twice for a tower on Fort Oglethorpe Mountain but the FAA operations department denied the application both times despite approval by nine other reviewing departments. Staff then sought alternate Monument Road locations; one option would have required a lease from a private owner (Vanguard). The DNR-owned Tobacco Patch tract would be no-cost under an IGA, Hawk said, and staff asked the board to move the IGA forward so it could meet DNR’s June 26 agenda timeline.
Hawk updated the board on the broader radio upgrade program: Liberty Road site (monopole) at the new E-911 center is being outfitted; Amicalola site has a new shelter and tower and Amicalola EMC is providing power; JC Burt site is ready; Etowah site work is on hold pending Monument Road placement because the sites will interoperate. County Attorney Miss Davis said she had circulated comments and noted a minor party-name correction; staff asked that the IGA move to the voting session for formal approval.
