The Platteville Common Council on Oct. 22 approved a budget amendment (No. 3) to fund geotechnical borings and analysis at the Platteville Family Aquatic Center (PFAC) vessel site after the pool structure sustained catastrophic damage in May 2024.
Council Member Bob Gates, representing the Platteville Aquatic Recreation Subcommittee (PARS), said the group recommended eight borings at a depth of 25 feet inside and along the previous excavation footprint so engineers can evaluate subsurface soils and confirm whether to rebuild at the existing location. Valley Testing Inc. (CVT) provided a quote of $9,000 for the scope.
Staff said the amendment will move $7,500 from a playground contingency item and $2,500 from anticipated unused CIP funds into the pool project fund to pay CVT; no additional property-tax levy is required. The motion to approve the budget amendment and hire CVT was made by Gates and seconded by Ken Killian; the roll-call vote carried.
Why it matters: The geotechnical work will provide engineering data needed to decide whether the existing PFAC location is suitable for reconstruction and to design any necessary foundation or stabilization work before committing to further plans or expenditures.
