Council affirms naming of Keith Terrell Sports Complex; family urges more prominent sign placement

The Platteville Common Council voted Oct. 22 to adopt Resolution 24-16, formally affirming the naming of the Keith Terrell Sports Complex (which the resolution describes as inclusive of Woodward Field, Hill Field, Chamberlain Field and Abing Field) within Legion Park.

Lynette Terrell Bunch, the daughter of Keith Terrell, addressed the council during citizen comments and asked the city to restore a larger, more prominent sign at the park entrance in the same location and style as the original dedication sign. She described her father's decades of service organizing and improving local baseball and Little League fields, the 2000 dedication ceremony and her disappointment that the more recent sign placements were not prominent and, in her view, had included a spelling error that has since been corrected. "My father's sign should be placed in the same place it was originally," she told the council.
City staff noted the resolution does not prescribe specific signage and reminded the council the resolution also contains clauses that name the complex so the designation is recorded and that the naming would no longer apply if the fields ceased to serve their intended purpose. Council members voiced support for preserving Terrell's legacy and asked staff to return with options for more prominent signage, historical context and the potential to use QR codes or other interpretive material to present Lynnette Terrell Bunch's submitted historical information.
