Summary
TxDOT briefed the Laredo MPO on active projects including the US 59 expansion, SH 84 work and several rehabilitations, reporting current completion percentages and expected years of completion for major contracts in Webb County.
Jose Vargas, identified in the meeting as the TxDOT/Laredo engineer, told the Laredo MPO on Sept. 17 that TxDOT currently has 22 active projects in Webb County with about $800 million in active contract value.
"We currently have 22 active projects. We're hovering around $800,000,000 on active contracts," Vargas said. He reported the US 59 expansion as an approximately $344 million investment and said, "we are at about 30% complete," with work under way on concrete pavements, drill shafts for bridges, embankment, drainage and base work; expected completion was given as 2029.
Vargas said State Highway 84 work has an estimated investment of $122 million and is about 50% complete, with contractors preparing rebar for future concrete pavement and several bridges at or near concrete slab stage and an expected completion date of 2027. He said a separate U.S. 359 project (noted with an award to Andersen Columbia) is a roughly $50 million contract, about 60% complete, with final base and hot-mix paving remaining and a 2026 completion target.
On the Lomas del Sur project Vargas reported approximately 75% completion; crews were preparing temporary detours, mobilizing concrete barrier and switching traffic to construct the overpass. He also reported a $25 million rehabilitation project (CSJ noted in staff materials) at about 31% complete with in-place base rehabilitation finishing and hot-mix to follow.
Vargas closed by urging drivers to "drive safely throughout our work zones" and opened for questions; none were raised at the meeting.
Why it matters: The project timelines and investment levels affect traffic patterns, detours and local construction impacts in Webb County and the City of Laredo. The US 59 expansion in particular is a multi-year project that will continue to affect regional travel through at least 2029.
What’s next: TxDOT will continue staging and construction activities; MPO staff and local officials will monitor progress and coordinate on detours and public communications.
