The Everett Fire Department on Aug. 20 presented its Citizen Lifesaver Award to 13‑year‑old Gage Bryant for rescuing a child who had been underwater beneath a dock at Silver Lake on July 8.
“Without hesitation, he dove beneath the water to search for the boy… he dove down again, wrapped his arms around the boy, and brought him to the surface,” Fire Chief Dave DeMarco told the council while describing the rescue. DeMarco said other onlookers, including emergency‑room nurses Pam Olsen, Jennifer Fuller and Jacqueline Ziruca, administered CPR until firefighters arrived and paramedics transported the child, who regained consciousness and later made a full recovery.
Chief DeMarco said the group received a Marine Team patch and a challenge coin in recognition of their lifesaving actions and that Gage completed CPR and first‑aid certification the day before the council meeting. Mayor Franklin praised the rescuers and invited them to the dais so the council and audience could applaud the group’s “courageous” actions.
The award presentation emphasized community response, training and the value of bystander intervention in water emergencies; council members described the recognition as an example of neighbors helping neighbors.
