CARPINTERIA, Calif. — The Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees approved a College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP) agreement with Santa Barbara City College on Sept. 9 that formalizes dual‑enrollment offerings and establishes course sequences for an early‑college program at Carpinteria High School.
Principal Gerardo Cornejo described the immediate course offerings supported by the agreement, including SBCC‑credit sections in personal development (three units) for freshmen, calculus (five units) for seniors (co‑taught with a City College professor), pre‑calculus, chemistry and U.S. history sequences. Cornejo said roughly 287 student enrollments were listed across the approved courses for the coming year.
Why it matters: The CCAP agreement increases guaranteed college credit availability for high‑school students by allowing select community‑college courses to be offered on the high‑school campus and by encouraging pathway completion. The agreement expands local dual‑enrollment capacity and can reduce students’ college costs and time to degree.
Implementation and teacher qualifications The agreement envisions high‑school teachers delivering SBCC courses where they meet community‑college minimum qualifications; district officials said they are pursuing grant funding and foundation partnerships to support teachers in obtaining required qualifications. The district also will map when and how students take CCAP courses, who will teach them and whether courses run in summer or during the academic year.
Board action Trustees approved the CCAP agreement (effective through June 30, 2030). The approval directs staff to finalize course mapping, instructor qualifications and pathway scheduling with SBCC and to identify funding sources for teacher professional development and any necessary materials.
Next steps Administration will return with a detailed pathway map and an implementation plan for instructor qualifications and scheduling. The agreement does not obligate the district to a specific enrollment level beyond the approved pathways; course offerings will be scheduled based on student demand and instructor availability.
