District outlines capital-project drafts, athletic light repairs and plans for multi-year facility plan

Jackson County Public Schools staff provided facility and capital-project updates, including architectural drafts, recently completed work on access controls at one campus, restored athletic lighting and plans to move toward a three-year capital plan.
Superintendent Dr. Ayers told the board March community input sessions on capital projects had been well attended; the largest session at Blue Ridge drew nearly 50 stakeholders. Jake (capital projects presenter) said Pinnacle Architect has supplied rough drafts for the bus garage and the Fairview cafeteria and kitchen projects, and the district is still awaiting drafts for Blue Ridge and several athletic projects at Smoky Mountain High School.
Jake reported that access controls are up and running at Cullowhee Valley School with “a few small hiccups,” and thanked Greg Stewart and other operations staff for facilitating the installation. He also noted the baseball field at Smoky Mountain High School hosted the program’s first game under lights; an earlier issue prevented Webster softball from playing under lights, but the lights are now functioning.
Looking beyond immediate repairs, Jake said the district plans to shift from annual capital requests to a three-year capital plan that will ask principals for their top requests across a multi-year horizon. The three-year planning approach is intended to provide a more coordinated timeline for larger facilities projects that have been on the district’s 10‑year list for several years.
Board members asked clarifying questions about drafts and timelines. Jake said the board will see capital planning details as part of the upcoming budget presentations.
