The Town of Smithfield council approved entering into a construction contract with Ledford Contracting Group to carry out work on the Hastings House using a State Historic Preservation Office grant.
Gary (Parks & Recreation) told the council the town received an emergency supplemental historic preservation grant in 2022 that was later increased and—together with a council allocation—created a project budget for repair and preservation work. He said Mywa Architecture prepared design documents, administered the bidding process and vetted the single responsive bidder with the State Historic Preservation Office.
Staff recommended contracting with Ledford Contracting Group for the base bid plus alternatives based on the architecture firm's and the state office's review. Gary told council the contractor has 180 days to complete the work per the grant timetable, though he did not expect the full period to be necessary.
A council member moved to approve the request; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. Staff will administer the grant-funded project, work with Mywa Architecture on construction oversight, and return to the council as required by grant accounting and reporting rules.
