Mayor urges finalization of school-resource-officer agreement ahead of school start

Mayor Malik joined the Aug. 11 Akron Public School Board meeting and urged the board to finalize the school-resource-officer (SRO) agreement with the city so officers can be in place when the school year begins.
"I think this is an important program the city's had for many years and I'm hopeful that we can get that finished tonight," the mayor said. He told the board there had been negotiation all day between city and district legal counsel and said, "We do need to have a contract, today," to allow officers to make operational arrangements before the new school year.
Board members expressed appreciation for the city’s partnership and emphasized the need for careful language. Reverend Harrison said the board values the program and wants a clear, fair agreement, but noted it was unlikely the board would approve final language that same evening because additional work remained. Superintendent Outley and board legal counsel also took part in back-and-forth discussions earlier in the day, and the board indicated revised language would continue to be negotiated before a final vote.
No formal vote on the SRO contract took place during the public meeting. The board discussed the contract in public remarks and signaled continued negotiation between district and city attorneys before a potential approval at a subsequent meeting.
