Committee to add agenda item to coordinate Veterans Day events after El Dorado College schedules Nov. 11 observance

"We're looking right now, tentatively. We're still making some adjustments and getting everything laid out over the next few weeks. We are looking at hosting it at the bridal David Barclay Can Do Chapel Memorial Chapel there on campus at 10 a. M.," said Albert Hernandez (representing the college) when he presented the date to the committee and asked members to save the date.
Committee members noted the American Legion traditionally stages a Veterans Day parade and observance on the 11th at 11 a.m., and asked the college to consider alternative times. "It might conflict with the American Legion, Veterans Day parade. We always have it on November 11. ... It's a tradition that we do it every Veterans Day," a committee member said.
In response to several speakers, committee members agreed to add an action item to a future agenda so organizations can present their planned Memorial Day and Veterans Day events in advance and coordinate dates and times. Members suggested a standing coordination item for the October meeting and proposed a subcommittee of representatives from each organization to meet and present a coordinated calendar.
Crystal Cabito (VA clinic) recommended organizations present events three months in advance when possible; other speakers suggested 36 months lead time. The committee directed staff to place a coordination item on an upcoming agenda so members can vote on a process for inter-organizational scheduling.
No final schedule changes were adopted at the Sept. 16 meeting; the college and other groups said they would continue to discuss timing and said details will be shared at the next meeting.
