Local veteran peer coordinator promotes Sept. 27 5K and wellness fair for suicide prevention

Randy, a veteran peer service coordinator, told the City of Laredo veterans committee that a Sept. 27 event combining a 5K trail run and a mental-health and wellness fair will be held in partnership with the City of Laredo to mark Suicide Prevention Month.
"We're going to be remembering the 17 veterans that died by suicide every day and, bringing the community together, through a mental health and wellness fair," Randy said, urging people to register. He said registration can be completed via a QR code, the Awareness Warriors Facebook page, or by in-person registration that the team will offer for people who have difficulty with online signups.
The event runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Randy said. The 5K trail run will include obstacles and a 17-pound sandbag carry that he said "represents and symbolizes the weight of the issue and remembering the 17 that died by suicide every day." Teams are eight people by default; registrants may sign up as a single and be placed into teams, or sign up as "battle buddies" to ensure they stay with a chosen support group.
Organizers also will offer a free 1K walk with an obstacle-free course for participants who cannot use the trail run. Randy said the event will include food trucks, vendors, music, fitness organizations and mental-health resource providers. The city provided sponsorship for some medals; the first registered participants and top teams will receive medals.
Randy said proceeds (requested donation: $17) will fund local suicide-prevention efforts and that an option during registration allows $7 of the $17 to go to the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post to help identify and assist at-risk families.
Asked about registration access, Randy said the team will hold an in-person registration day (location tentatively Bonafide North) to help people sign up and that in-person sign-up improves chances of being placed with a chosen team.
The committee received the announcement as an informational item; no formal committee action was recorded.
