The Birmingham City Commission approved a change order on Aug. 11 to extend the city’s concrete sidewalk and concrete patching program into 2025 using the contractor and unit prices from the 2024 program.
Scope and cost: The change order adds residential sidewalk repairs in the Northeast neighborhood (area described in staff memo), downtown area concrete repairs, sidewalk and bench pads in specified parks, scattered alley and sidewalk patches and a set of local and major street concrete patches (sample streets in the packet included Lincoln Road, Maple Road and Pierce Street). The change order authorizes work in an amount not to exceed $930,622.10 and used the incumbent contractor’s agreement with unit pricing held from the previous year.
Procurement and schedule: The contractor for the 2024 program (Atalia) agreed to hold the pricing for 2025; staff said the work includes both safety repairs and selected panel replacements similar to what the city has undertaken on other corridors. Major street patching will be localized panel removal and replacement rather than full‑depth large‑scale reconstructions.
Vote: The commission approved the change order by roll call vote; all commissioners recorded yes.
Ending: Staff will coordinate resident notifications as streets and sidewalks are scheduled and will return if additional contingency funding or scope adjustments are necessary.
