Board names Cypress High wrestling room for Coach John Lundberg

The Anaheim Union High School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously Sept. 11 to rename the wrestling room at Cypress High School in honor of John Lundberg.

The vote, taken during the board's regular meeting, approved a request to name the interior wrestling room after Lundberg, a longtime teacher and head wrestling coach whose tenure at Cypress included two decades leading the program and producing multiple league and CIF competitors.

Former head girls wrestling coach Darren Norris told the board that Lundberg’s impact extended beyond wins. “Coach Lundberg has mentored countless coaches, inspired generations of athletes, and earned deep respect from referees, opponents, and peers,” Norris said. Norris said Lundberg helped build the girls program from the ground up and described him as “humble, generous, and wholly dedicated to his wrestlers.”

Sean Pfeiffer, athletic director at Cypress High School, added that Lundberg expanded opportunities for girls’ wrestling at Cypress and in the county and noted the program’s increase in state qualifiers under Lundberg’s leadership.

Lundberg expressed appreciation after the vote. “It is an honor, and it's very humbling,” he said, adding that his emphasis was always on students’ development rather than trophies.

The motion to approve the renaming was moved and seconded on the dais and carried by a voice vote recorded as 5-0. The motion did not identify a mover or seconder in the public record.

Why it matters: The renaming recognizes a locally prominent coach whose work the board and community described as having long-term effects on student-athletes and the district’s wrestling program. The facility change applies to an internal, single-use room at the Cypress High campus.
