Lake Forest Park — The City Council on Aug. 12 approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to sign two statewide settlement packages that would bind the city to the Washington Attorney General’s opioid‑remediation allocation and release agreements.
City Attorney staff summarized two agreements available for municipal participation: (1) the Purdue Pharma and Sackler family settlement, which is subject to bankruptcy‑court approval, and (2) a separate settlement with a group of opioid manufacturers. Staff noted that participation requires a timely acceptance and the city’s share would be distributed under Washington’s allocation formula agreed in the statewide memorandum of understanding.
Attorney Pratt said the agreements include both monetary payments and injunctive provisions limiting future marketing and certain business practices by the settling companies. The proposed resolution authorized the mayor to execute the Purdue/Sackler agreement and the manufacturer participation forms; staff recommended approving both documents together because the AG’s office expects timely city participation.
Council first voted to suspend the three‑touch rule for the resolution. After the suspension passed, the council then voted to adopt the resolution; the motion passed unanimously. The city clerk will execute the participation documents and return them to the state for inclusion in the aggregated settlement process.
Ending: The settlement authorizes Lake Forest Park to participate in the statewide allocation and to receive a portion of future settlement disbursements, subject to final approvals and participation thresholds in the statewide agreement.
